Cluster formation versus star formation around six regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud

چکیده
We studied the stellar population and star clusters around six regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in order to understand the correlation between star formation and cluster formation episodes. We used the stellar data base of the OGLE II LMC survey and the star cluster catalogues. The analysis of the colourmagnitude diagrams (CMDs) were used to estimate the ages of the stellar population. It is found that most of the regions have undergone three major star formation episodes. The star formation which began about 4 Gyr ago, continued upto around 1 Gyr, or continued further. The other two events have taken place around 300 Myr, and 100 Myr. A few star clusters were formed during the first of the three star formation events in 5 regions. In all the six regions, a good correlation is seen between the star formation and the cluster formation events which occurred at 300 Myr and 100 Myr. The cluster formation events and the fraction of star clusters formed were found to be very similar for two regions located to the south-east of the Bar, suggesting similar cluster formation triggers at almost similar instances. The two recent star formation events seem to correlate with the interactions of LMC with Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and Galaxy. Hence it is quite likely that the young populous star clusters in the LMC are formed as a result of the star formation events started due to galaxy-galaxy interactions and the further propagation of such star formation.

متن کاملThe Star Formation History of the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present the first-ever global, spatially-resolved reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on the application of our StarFISH analysis software to the multiband photometry of twenty million of its stars from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey. The general outlines of our results are consistent with previously published results: follo...
متن کاملStar formation in galaxies and star clusters
This thesis is devoted to star formation from galaxy-scales (≈ 10 000 pc) to sub-star cluster-scales (≈ 0.1 pc). I develop and test a new method to derive star formation histories of Galaxies from their star cluster content, in particular the most massive star clusters. This is followed by an application of this method to the Large Magellanic Cloud, where the results of this new method are conf...
متن کاملThe Local Stellar Population of Novae Regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud
The distribution of novae across the face of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is presented. The star formation history of nearby regions around them is also studied using photometric data of stars and star clusters in the OGLE II survey and star cluster catalogues. The nova population in the LMC belong, predominantly, to the fast category, with only 11.8% belonging to the slow nova population. ...
متن کاملThe Local Stellar Population of Nova Regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud
This study aims at identifying and understanding the parent population of novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by studying the local, projected, stellar population. The star formation history of the local environment around novae is studied based on photometric data of stars and star clusters in the nova neighbourhood, available in the OGLE II survey and star cluster catalogues. The age of...
